Geography Introduction

Geography is a dynamic, interesting and entirely relevant subject. It is taught in a manner reflecting this. The topics taught show a mix of human and physical geography and are have been selected for their relevance to the world around us. They all encompass local, regional global scales allowing the students to recognise their place in a seemingly gigantic world. In Key Stage 3 traditional topics such as population and Plate Tectonics stand alongside more contemporary issues such as Africa, China and Health. All topics take either a numeracy, literacy, citizenship or enterprise approach. This allows students to practice cross-curricular skills whilst learning how these can be applied to geography.

Key stage 4 follows the AQA 'A' GCSE syllabus and includes topics on Settlement, Rivers, Managing Resources, Coasts, Plate Tectonics and Industry. 25% of the final mark is awarded through coursework. This is based on a study of the local area.

Fieldtrips are important part of learning Geography and destinations include the Dorset Coast, Isle of Wight and of course, Southampton!

The department emphasises excellent teaching. Geography can and should be a fascinating subject and is taught with the enthusiasm and challenge it deserves!
