The English courses seek to develop within the students of the college an ability to communicate effectively, accurately and appropriately in speech and writing and to understand and respond sensitively to what they see, hear and read in a variety of texts and media.
The department aims to play its part within and beyond the college curriculum in helping girls to develop critical awareness of themselves and the world in which they live; to work in co-operation with others; take responsibility for their own actions and develop a positive attitude towards their own learning.
In Years 7, 8 and 9 English work includes a range of different styles of writing such as creative, imaginative, persuasive and argumentative writing. Great emphasis is placed on reading and the appreciation of literature both contemporary and classical. Drama, library studies and Media Studies are also key elements of the courses. Top sets in Years 8 and 9 also study Latin and Classical Civilisation.
The department expects 100% entrance for G.C.S.E. and demands high standards of work from all students, whatever their ability. Examinations are offered in English and English Literature.
